Hope Eternally Springs

“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved

it is the power of God.” - 1 Corinthians 1:18

We recently visited Fountain’s Abbey near Ripon and were struck by the carpets of snowdrops flowering around the monastery. These little flowers are thought by many to have been introduced to our country by Norman monks who planted them as a medicinal plant for the treatment of ‘Mal au tete’ – problems of the head.

It is interesting to note that galantamine, found in snowdrops, is now used as a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease.

Among the first flowers to bloom in the year, heralding the approach of spring, they have come to symbolise hope - the hope of lighter days after the darkness of winter, of new life and new beginnings.

But as we entered the cellarium of the Abbey we were greeting by another, far more powerful symbol of hope.

For those who believe, the message of the cross of Jesus is the power of God.” (1 Corinthians 1:18). Jesus died for our sin and rose from the dead to give us new life in Him, a new beginning, reconciled to God and forgiven of all our sin. Our hope is not for a Spring that will fade as winter rolls around again, but of eternal life in Christ our Saviour.
