The Gospel

"For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed – a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: ‘The righteous will live by faith." Romans 1:17

1. WHAT IS THE GOSPEL? • Good news. 5 key things about it:

a) Belongs to God: v1 • He owns it, originated with him, he designed it

b) Message of the whole the Bible: v2 • It is fresh and up to date, but also old: Gen 3:15

c) ConcernsJesusChrist:v3-4 • Jesus is “Son of God”, “Christ”- Messiah, “Lord”

d) Gives Salvation: v5-6, v16-17 • A complete rescue, making us acceptable to God

e) Received by faith: v5, v16-17

2. WHO IS IT FOR? • Paul wants people to hear and believe:

a) Gentiles: v5 – non-Jews • His work: “the obedience of faith” = “Bowing the knee in trusting submission to JC the Lord, both at start and through Christian life”

b) Jews: v16 • Everyone! This message is for you!

c) Christians:v13,v15 • Your greatest need as a Christian is the gospel • All of us have a gift to encourage others: our faith

3. WHY DOES EVERYONE NEED IT? • Gives us righteousness of God: v16-17 • Attribute of God: utterly fair to core of his being

• Activity of God’s person: always does right • It is a free gift to us: he makes us acceptable • Revealed in the gospel: comes to us in Jesus • Without it we are lost. • Why do Christians need that message? • Our growth fed by constantly returning to acquittal • New Testament brings every issue back to the gospel

• We have been approved by God
